Isaac’s neighbors probably thought he was drunk. When he stepped out of Colton’s car after one last kiss, he could barely keep his legs under him. On the way up the porch steps, he nearly stumbled, and going into the house, he clipped the doorframe with his shoulder.
His lips still tingled with the phantom remnants of Colton’s soft, gentle kiss. His many soft, gentle kisses. A few down by the water. Another just before they stepped into the reception after strolling back, hand in hand. A long one in the car before Colton drove him home and a shorter, lighter one in the driveway just moments ago.
It wasn’t as if he’d never been kissed before at all. He and Candace had kissed plenty of times.
But he’d never felt this way when he kissed her. He’d never felt this way at all.
Dazed, he locked the front door behind him and headed upstairs. He went straight into the confession room because . . . because . . .
Because where else could he go with all this weighing on his mind?
Sitting in the familiar chair, he couldn’t make himself look at the camera, but the words came easily.
“I chose to let myself be attracted to men. But this? What I feel right now?” He exhaled slowly and shook his head.
“Tonight felt . . . bigger than it should have been. Like this was something inevitable that we’d been moving toward for . . . for I don’t know how long. Like God was moving us toward tonight, and when tonight happened, it wasn’t something I could choose or deny. It just . . . it just was. And I couldn’t stop it from happening any more than I could stop my own heart.”
He rested his elbows on his knees and steepled his fingers in front of his lips, replaying his own words over and over in his mind. As confused as he was, one thing was for sure—he was in way, way over his head.
“What does this mean? What is it I’m feeling? I don’t know. I don’t know anything except that if ever there was a moment in my life where I felt like I was exactly where I needed to be, doing exactly what I was meant to do, this was it.”
He rubbed his hands over his face. This was madness. How many times had he preached that the Devil deceived homosexuals? That he lured them in and made them think black was white and wrong was right?
This couldn’t go on.
Except it had to. He needed to see this documentary through. And maybe it was safer this way, getting involved with a man he could be sure wasn’t dangerous. After all, he hadn’t gone into this to prove that being gay was a form of Russian roulette. He only had to prove that a man could choose to be gay, and then choose to be straight again.
So far, so good.
He turned off the camera. Then he left the confession room to get ready for bed.
